The score of a disease given by

is given by the following equation:

Another way to explain this is that each symptom is scored for mitochondrial or non-mitochondrial involvement.

Each symptom gets a mitochondrial value, m, based on the average number of patients affected when averaging across all the mitochondrial disease that display that particular symptom.

The same symptom gets a non-mitochondrial value, n, based on the average number of patients affected when averaging across all the non-mitochondrial diseases that display that particular symptom.

The values m and n are then multiplied by the amount of patients affected by the particular symptom in the disease that is being tested yielding mc and nc.

This process is repeated for each symptom seen in the disease tested that is found in at least one disease in the database.

The sum of mc's gives mct and the sum of nc's gives nct. The final score is then given by:

       score = 100 * mct / ( mct+nct )
